About
The Finest Lincolnshire PotatoesA little bit about The Spud Barn
The Spud Barn is run by the Armstrong family (David, Della, Kate and Ross) in Bardney, Lincolnshire. David Armstrong has been growing potatoes at Abbey Farm since 1990, alongside combinable crops such as wheat, linseed and peas.
All of the potatoes we sell have been grown by us, so are fully traceable with low food miles. Our farm is Red Tractor and LEAF Marque assured, so you can be confident that the potatoes are grown with food safety and the environment in mind.
We have a huge passion for potatoes, and hope that you will share some of this passion with us once you have tried our Spuds!
We offer the potatoes for sale by collection from Abbey Farm and also delivery to a selection of local villages, see our upcoming delivery dates on our home and product pages.
David Armstrong grew up on his family farm with his sister and 2 brothers, just a few miles from Abbey Farm, where he farms today. It was during his early years on the family farm that his love of growing potatoes began, his father Bob grew a small area of Wilja which were bagged and sold at the farm gate.
In 1990, David started farming in his own right at Abbey Farm, at this time he grew about 20 acres of potatoes alongside combinable crops such and wheat and oilseed rape.
In 1992 investment was made in to building an 800 tonnes ambient bulk store, this was the beginning of the potato growing expansion.
In 2001, further investment was put in to building a 1100 tonnes cold store, to enable potatoes to be stored on farm for longer periods. This was a major step change in potato growing at Abbey Farm.
An additional 900 tonnes of cold storage was added in 2004, and at this present time there is around 150 acres of potatoes grown each year. Throughout these 30 years, David has always bagged a small tonnage of potatoes in 25kg bags for sale at the farm gate.
In 2019, David’s daughter Kate became more involved in the farming business. She started looking at diversification ideas to help make the business more resilient for the future challenges UK agriculture is facing, offering smaller bags of potatoes was one of the ideas.
Fast forward a few months and we find ourselves in the midst of the Covid-19 Global Pandemic, where supermarket supply chains couldn’t cope with the increased demand and people’s focus turned to shopping locally. During the first national lockdown of early 2020 we offered 25kg bags for sale to the local village, and delivered to those who were self isolating.
It was at this stage that The Spud Barn was born. We got set up for bagging 10kg bags, which we started supplying in September 2020 and in October 2020 we started offering our delivery service to some of the surrounding villages.
The Spud Barn is a family run business with a huge passion for potatoes, a passion that we hope you will share with us once you have tried our spuds.
